In my paintings, I'm compelled to tell, suggest, or imply a story. While it can cover a wide variety of subjects and situations, storytelling is the most basic and essential element of my work. In the past I've been very direct, thinking often of my compositions as stills from a movie or scenes from a book. This brought me around to a new approach which is far more litteral and, at the same time, more removed. Instead of looking at the television screen, so to speak, we've now stepped behind it and look instead at the other viewers. The subjects of the paintings are no longer players in a story for our benefit, but spectators enoying their own entertainment. Only passively do they share their story with the viewer of the piece, if they share it at all.
